European Commission states: ‘Two Schools Under One Roof’ in opposition to European values

In discussing Bosnian application for the membership of the EU, the meeting reiterated that the European Commission will place special attention to the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in relation to the phenomenon of two schools under one roof. This position of the European Commission is a confirmation of the recent announcement that the EU insists on the abolition of segregation of children on an ethnic basis in Bosnia. Furthermore, a special document asking for a discontinuation of two schools under one roof was circulated to participants at the meeting. Representatives of the German administration have insisted on the implementation of this document, which stated that these schools are guilty of children's segregation and the continuation of national divisions in the country. German administration advocates the introduction of a unified curriculum and the joint education of children, regardless of their linguistic and other specifics. Representatives of Croatia in the EU institutions are strongly opposed to this proposal as they are worried that their right to preservation of Croatian language in schools may be endangered by abolishment of segregated schooling. In summary of the meeting BiH will remain a candidate country until it adopts the European values that imply that the classroom is shared space for children of different national or religious groups.
